It all started in September, 2011. Destinee was only 12 years old. We were in Florida to see the Gators play Tennessee. It was very hot that day and people were falling out from heat exhaustion and Destinee said to me, “mommy I feel sick, I feel like I’m about to pass out.” So I took her out of the stands and we found a cool area to sit as the game continued.
At that time my husband and I assumed Destinee was feeling this way was feeling because of the heat. We found out later it was so much more. She continue to feel bad on the 5 hour ride home. Her equilibrium was off for weeks. She suffering with headaches and dizziness for weeks to the point where she was unable to go to school.
She was first diagnosed with a sinus infection which I’m sure she had but I just couldn’t understand how a sinus infection could cause all the problems it was causing for Destinee. She was placed on Homebound instruction because the dizziness prevented her attending school. Homebound instruction is when a teacher comes into the home for an hour a day to instruct and assist a student with daily class assignments. This is to assure that the student does not fall behind in school.
The headaches got worse and then came the pain all over her body. It seemed to us that things were going from one extreme to another. She was 12 years old and did not know how to handle this unforeseen sickness that was causing her so much pain. The pain became unbearable it kept her up day and night. Many nights she cried herself to sleep. She was restless, fatigued and depressed. She became depressed because this sickness altered her life.
Before Destinee’s sickness she was in the gifted and talented program at her school and was apart of dance and drama. She was very active and involved in school activities but due to the pain she was unable to attend school, and couldn’t do drama or dance anymore. Her movement became less and less and because of this she lost the muscle mass in her legs and was unable to walk on her own. Her legs were like jello.
After Destinee’s seventh hospitalization she had to result to using a walker and a wheelchair and was assigned a physical and occupational therapist came to the house to help her strengthen and regain use of her legs. After the seventh hospitalization, there were appointments, tests and several diagnoses. Then there was a final diagnosis by the Doctors of Migraine and tension headaches, a chemical imbalance of Hormones and Fibromyalgia. What is fibromyalgia, where did it come from and how was Destinee going to be cured from it was the questions in our minds.
Well its been almost four years and Destinee is still suffering with this illness that continues to alter her life. As a honored student who aspires to achieve so much the pain continuously gets in her way.
